Disabled athletes must have a certification of disability.
In order to take part in competitions, Paralympic (disabled) athletes must have a valid medical certification assessing their fitness to dance competition. This certification must be issued by a sport physician (Italian Law Decree dated 4th March 1993).
Classification
Prior to competition, athletes in wheelchair and those with sight or hearing impairments needs to be classified in order to ensure a just competition.
Athletes who have been already classified need not undergoing an examination, unless they ask to do so because their limitations have become more severe.
-Athletes in wheelchair can be classified as either 1 class or 2 class, following an examination of their functioning (through specific tests) in relation to dance. A special commission carries out the assessment.
-The sight or hearing impaired athletes are classified as B1(complete or very severe blindness or deafness) if they have a certification issued by INPS (the Italian Welfare Authority) stating a disability degree which entitles to be granted a pension; otherwise, they are classified as B2.
Dance performance
· Competition units: Solo, Couple, Team
· Music shall last from 1'30” to 10 '.
· Assessment system: technical-artistic scoring (scoring for skating will include artistic execution, the use of space, the integration between the disabled and the able-bodied dancer, technical skills).
· All dance styles are allowed:CONTEMPORARY, DANCE THEATER –MODERN (all styles); –HIPHOP,BREAK DANCE,STREET DANCE,URBAN DANCE (all languages);
SPECIAL SHOW (mix of different styles).
· Categories: unified classes.
· Dress code: free, but proper and decorous.
· Disabled team members may have limitations of different kinds and shall account for at least 10% of members.
· Also same-sex athletes can dance in a couple.
·Jury: jury must be made up of an odd number of members, with mixed and balanced gender composition.
. The jury will judge the exhibitions from 1 to 10 depending on the following criteria:
Choreography: distribution of figures and moves in the ballet.
Use of space.
Costumes.
Technical level : execution of moves in line with technique, execution of figures, lifte
Technical moves (attitude, elegance, carriage, speed of execution, balance).
Musicality: coherence and execution according to music rhythm.
Interpretation:musical and gestural interpretation, coherence with the theme proposed,meaning and conveying of emotions.
Scores are summed up and the total (Max 40 scores) determines the ranking order.
The decision of the jury and the prize awarding are final and not appealable.
All music kinds are allowed (provided there are no offenses to decency).
Percussion instruments are also allowed in the performance.
In case of group composed by IRD athletes only, the instructor is allowed to use the voice or a music instrument to guide the performance for up to 50% of time duration.
